HMRC Statement - Issued 25 January 2021

HMRC today revised their previous guidance and issued a statement that Self Assessment Customers will not now receive a penalty for filing their 2019 - 20 tax return late, as long as they file online by 28 February. They are still encouraging people who have not yet filed to do so by 31 January, if at all possible.

Individuals still need to pay any tax due by 31 January 2021. Interest will be charged from 1st February on any outstanding liabilities. Payments can be made online, or through their bank, or by post before they file.

For individuals having difficulty paying by 31 January, HMRC have stated they may be able to set up an affordable payment plan and pay in monthly installments, but they will need to file their 2019 - 20 return before setting up a time to pay arrangement.

As always I would strongly advise anyone encountering difficulties to contact HM Revenue & Customs at their earliest possible convenience. These problems do not disappear, and the Revenue are always a lot more amenable if they can see an effort is being made to resolve the situation.
